STAFF REPORT
To: Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe
City Council Members
City Manager Scot Wrighton
From: Shane Brandel, Interim Chief of Police
Subject: Accept the Intergovernmental Agreement to share JAG Grant 2020-H9365-IL-DJ
BRIEFING ITEM
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
It is the recommendation of staff that the council approve the intergovernmental agreement for
distribution of JAG funds to address Guns and Violent Crime.
BACKGROUND:
The Decatur Police Department applied for and was awarded up to$29,430 in JAG Grant
funding for the enforcement of laws associated with violent and gun crimes to be used by
September 30, 2023.
This grant is, and always has been, a shared grant between DPD and the Macon County
Sheriff's Office (MCSO),with 75%reserved for DPD and 25%reserved for MCSO. When
this specific grant was previously brought to council for approval,MCSO had not indicated
they planned to request their portion of the grant, thus no intergovernmental agreement was
included with the previous council documents. Since being awarded the grant, the Decatur
Police Department was notified by MCSO that they did wish to seek their portion of the
reimbursement. As such, an intergovernmental agreement between the agencies is
necessary since the City of Decatur will receive all of the requested funds and then disburse
the funds sought by MCSO.
It should be noted that the JAG grant has been awarded to DPD numerous times in the past
and the intergovernmental agreement between the two entities has been part of the
administration of the grant.
