STAFF REPORT
To: Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe
City Council Members
From: Scot Wrighton, City Manager
Shane Brandel, Chief of Police
Subject: Purchase of New Desktop Computers
BRIEFING ITEM
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve by resolution the purchase of 70 new desktop computers for the Decatur Police
Department.
BACKGROUND:
The Decatur Police Department moved into its current building in 2014. At that time, new desktop
computers were purchased for those officers/detectives/supervisors/civilians with their own desks
and a need for their own computers. Other officers use mobile computers in the squad cars or a
virtual desktop in the report room.
As with any technology, the computers purchased in 2014 have become outdated for the
technology being used by the Decatur Police Department. For example, many of the current
computers aren't able to handle large data extractions or don't have the processor speeds to view
video files. The Department has worked with the IT department to identify 70 desktop computers
in need of replacement. The type of desktop needed depends on the nature of the assignment.
The Department wants to purchase 34 computers for detectives that have enhanced speeds and
features. This is due to the nature of the duties and investigation requirements. These 34
computers have a cost of$51,000. In addition, another 36 desktops are for the uniformed division,
administration, and civilian positions. The cost of these 36 computers is $31,896.
The replacement of 70 total desktop computers has a total cost of$82,896.
