currently a task that often falls on the list of responsibilities for the Decatur
Police Department. The addition of a Crisis Response worker would allow
this task to be removed from their already full plate
By having a Crisis Response worker present early on at the scene of a
violent crime the emotional needs of the victim and their family are more
likely to be met and those individuals are placed on the path to healing
as soon as possible. According to the International Association of Chiefs of
Police, "victims who are treated with sensitivity and respect are more likely
to participate in investigations". Participation helps give the victim more
power and control of their situation.
- Decreased traumatic flashbacks
- By having a direct connection to victims of violent crime in our area, the
program can ensure that all are receiving information about the
counseling services that are available rather than relying on DPD or other
community organizations or community members to pass along the
information. In addition to receiving the information about counseling, the
Crisis Response worker and/or Case Manager can follow up on services
and/or coordinate transportation to get to appointments.
- Increased ability for parents to cope with trauma suffered due to their child
experiencing trauma
- Children are often the direct or indirect victims of violent crime, which can
also be emotionally difficult for parents. Having Crisis Responders available
early on can provide support to parents in their interactions with their
children. Crisis Responders can take the burden of finding immediate
resources (shelter, clothing, food etc.) off of the parents so they can focus
their attention on their children.
- The C 1 C crisis program has a partnership with Decatur Psychological (with
additional partnerships in the works) to be able to provide free counseling
services to children who have been victims of crime as well as their
parents.
Goal / Performance Measurements
- Crisis response workers will track what services are provided to individuals/families
throughout their time with Crisis Response.
- Crisis response workers will track the number of times returning home was not a
safe, viable option and emergency shelter was provided.
