M Mo Decatur
• PARK DISTRICT
To: Scot Wrighton
From: Clay Gerhard
Date: 11/14/23
Re: Senior Services
As you are aware, there have been ongoing conversations between the Decatur Park District
(DPD) and the Decatur Area Senior Citizens Council Inc. (d/b/a Decatur-Macon County Senior
Center) regarding the senior services offered to the residents of Decatur/Macon County.
Currently, services are being offered through both agencies to the senior community, some of
which are unique, however some of which are very similar and reflect duplication of effort
between the agencies.
Throughout the conversations between the two entities, as well as Community Home
Environmental Learning Project(CHELP), it became clear that housing many of the services
senior citizens need under one physical roof would provide a significant benefit to our senior
community. The Decatur-Macon County Senior Center has experienced several organizational
setbacks over recent years that have caused them to pause and reflect on their ability to
continue to operate as an independent organization. After discussions with the Park District,
they expressed an interest in having the Park District absorb the programs and services that are
currently being offered by Decatur-Macon County Senior Center to the Park District's program
offerings at the Scovill Activity Center. The Decatur-Macon Senior Center has since ceased
operations and has transitioned the delivery of services to the Decatur Park District. The Park
District has hired the two full-time employees who were previously on staff at the Decatur
Macon County Senior Center that were managing those services to ensure a smooth transition
for the seniors currently utilizing those services. Those employees became Park District
employees effective November 1St, 2023.
The long-desired plan of having a "one stop shop" for seniors is now underway. Phase One of
combining the programs and services currently provided by both the Park District and Decatur-
Macon County Senior Center'at Scovill Park West and having them administered by the Park
