Gus
' SOILS
The soils covering the bedrock are the result of several periods of glaciation and recent
weathering. The Wisonsian glacier buried the site with drift material called glacial till which is a
mixture of sand, silt, and clay. This glacial till forms the basement soil for this site.
During the withdrawal and melting of the Wisconsin Glacier, a large amount of water was
released. This melt water helped cut the broad flood plain of Stevens Creek, and deposited
' alluvium which consists of sand, silt, and clay, in the flood plain.
The glaciers also furnished a large amount of silt which was deposited by wind across the
uplands to form a deposit called loess. Weathering has modified this silt into a more clayey soil.
' The modified loess is the surface soil for some of the higher portions along the site.
FIELD AND LABORATORY EXPLORATION
SCOPE
Two (2) test borings were drilled at the site. Soil samples were secured from the borings for
laboratory analyses. Each boring was drilled to a depth of 61 feet. Standard penetration tests
were performed during advancement of the borings. Unconfined compression tests and
moisture content determinations were performed in the laboratory on the soil samples that were
suitable for testing.
'
BORING LOCATION PLAN
The test borings were drilled at the locations shown on the overhead maps in Appendix B. The
number, depths and locations of the borings were generally established by City of Decatur, in
1 accordance with project requirements.
BORING, SAMPLING AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Logs of borings were prepared and copies have been enclosed in Appendix B. These logs show
thicknesses, locations, and descriptions of the soil types encountered. Data concerning the
penetration resistance values, sample locations, water levels, etc., are given on the logs.
Geotechnical Exploration for Sanitary Pipeline
New Vulcan Waterline Pipeline, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois
SKS Project No. 12-418885 Page 2
