Bus
Boring, sampling, and laboratory procedures are discussed in detail on Sheets C-1 through C-
3, included in this report as Appendix C. All soil samples were examined and classified; cohesive
soil samples were tested for moisture content and unconfined compressive strengths.
Descriptions of these tests are given on Sheet C-2. Laboratory test results are given on the
boring logs. Descriptive terminology and the classification system used in preparing the boring
logs are shown on Sheet C-3. The Unified Soil Classification Chart is also included in Appendix
C for further clarification.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
It is our understanding the proposed construction at this site will consist of a new waterline
' pipeline. It is anticipated that some of the pipeline will be installed using trenchless methods
and some will be installed in standard, open-cut trenches. Typically, the pipelines will be ten
(10) to twenty (20) feet below ground surface. This type of construction, which involves open-
cut excavations and excavations for the tie-in pits, must meet the requirements of the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Construction Standards for
Excavations. This standard contains specific excavation and trenching requirements based on
soil types encountered by the excavation and/or trenches. The standard defines three (3)
different types of soil commonly encountered in this area. Type "A" soil is defined as cohesive
1 soils (classified as CL or CH) with an unconfined compressive strength of at least 1.5 tons per
square foot.
' Type "B" soil is defined as cohesive soils (classified as CL or CH) with an unconfined
compressive strength of at least 0.5 tons per square foot, but less than 1.5 tons per square foot,
and stable (does not contain flowing water) cohesionless soils (classified as GC, SC, GM, SM,
GW, SW, ML).
Type "C" soil is defined as any soil that contains seeping water; cohesive soils with an unconfined
compressive strength less than 0.5 tons per square foot, and any other unstable soils. Typical
excavation diagrams have been prepared for each of these soil types and for different
combinations. See Appendix D for these diagrams.
Geotechnical Exploration for Sanitary Pipeline
New Vulcan Waterline Pipeline, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois
SKS Project No. 12-418885 Page 3
