1
SSS
1
The best compaction of these cohesive soils may be obtained with sheepsfoot rollers operating
on thin (6-inch maximum) horizontal lifts/layers, after the soils' natural moisture content has been
adjusted as recommended. It is recommended the earthen berms be compacted to a minimum
1 of 95% of the maximum Standard Proctor dry density as determined by the ASTM D-698
laboratory compaction test for each soil type used.
1 Many of the surface cohesive soils are relatively slow draining. Accordingly, water can perch in
the fill material on these particular soils, which may potentially affect excavation procedures.
' Many of the on-site soils are also sensitive to disturbance by construction traffic, particularly in
the presence of groundwater. Because of this, portions of the excavations may need to be
' performed with backhoe-type equipment. Pumps for water removal should be provided. The
contractor should employ such construction equipment and cut/fill methods appropriate for the
site conditions present during construction.
For convenience, we have outlined the compaction requirements below:
' Area Percent of
Standard Proctor
General Trench Backfill 90
Grading for Landscape/Drainage 90
0' to 3' Below Paved Areas 100
3' and Greater Below Paved Areas 95
1
Geotechnical Exploration for Sanitary Pipeline
New Vulcan Waterline Pipeline, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois
SKS Project No. 12-418885 Page 9
