c t>p.
- Guidepost
<,NO
Driver Age
The age of the driver was recorded for all fatal crashes in the FARS dataset. Analysis revealed that fatal crashes
disproportionately involved drivers under the age of 25(young adults) and over the age of 75 (seniors). Although
young adults represent only aproximately 14%of licensed drivers, they were involved in aproximately 30%of the
fatal crashes studied. Due to this disparity, education and awarness campaigns targeting this group should be
developed to address the specific risks associated with this age group. Similarly, seniors account for just 7%of
licensed drivers but were involved in 17%of fatal crashes. None of the crashes involving seniors that were studied
were caused by a health related incident. Many seniors may succumb to injuries that a younger driver would survive.
Due to this fact, post crash care is the most critical factor in reducing fatal crashes involving seniors.
_ 4.2%
16-188. ° 17%
8,14816.7% /19-21
-/°
TOTAL
COUNT 75 OR OLDER N 1
OF FATAL CRASHES
27416.7% INVOLVED SENIORS
---'22-25
SEVERE CRASHES
3.4% 30%
SEVERE CRASH RATE 4.2%
„.u. 4' 26-34 Aisfr-
Tw OF FATAL CRASHES
' " INVOLVED
50% ' °wt,......35-74 YOUNG ADULTS
Figure 14-Fatal Crash Percentages by Age
TOTAL LICENSED DRIVERS 6%
7% '19 8%
75 OR OLDER 8 /
9,175,653 N
Or / -24
TOTAL COUNT
/1,410. 17%
25-34
61%
35-74
Figure 15-Total Licensed Drivers by Age
Kapur Page 31 of 81
