Marley, P.E.,Public Works Director <br /> SUBJECT: Sunset Levee In-Line Check Valve Installation, <br /> City Project 2015-13 <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: <br /> It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the contract for <br /> the Sunset Levee In-Line Check Valve Installation Project, City Project 2015-13, to Petersburg <br /> Plumbing and Excavating, LLC, as the lowest, responsive and responsible bidder in the amount of <br /> $55,250 and that the Mayor be authorized to execute the contract and the City Clerk to attest. <br /> PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION: <br /> • May 12, 1980—The City Council approved Resolution R80-73 which adopted plans and <br /> specifications for providing flood protection on West Riverview and West Sunset Avenues <br /> west of Summit near the Sangamon River flood plain. This project installed a levee and other <br /> drainage improvements to protect this area during high river flows in the Sangamon River. <br /> • March 9, 1981 —The City Council approved Resolution R81-06 authorizing the purchase of <br /> property for the Riverview and Sunset flood protection project. <br /> • September 8,2009—The City Council approved Resolution R2009-162 authorizing a <br /> $25,000 engineering services agreement with Shive-Hattery, Inc. to review the Riverview and <br /> Sunset Avenue flood protection area and recommend drainage improvements. City Project <br /> 2009-25. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> Project Description <br /> In the late 1970's a project was initiated to control flooding along the Sangamon River on the <br /> southwest side of the City near the west ends of Riverview and Sunset. This effort culminated <br /> with the installation of a flood protection levee and other drainage system improvements to protect <br /> this area as shown on the location map included herein. The levee construction included the <br /> installation of manually operated check valves in area storm sewers to enable the sewers to be <br /> closed during high flows in the Sangamon River to keep the river from backing up into the <br /> neighborhood behind the levee. A pump station was also installed near the west end of Sunset to <br /> pump stormwater from the neighborhood during high river flows. <br /> Page I 1 <br />
