Seniority <br /> and pension rights and civil service status shall not be affected by appointme t to an unclassified <br /> position and the time served therein shall constitute creditable service in sai classified position. <br /> In lieu of the compensation and benefits authorized for said classified p sition and attached <br /> thereto, the benefits of said unclassified position shall be substituted, where pon the same shall <br /> be considered to be authorized for and attached to that particular classifie position continued <br /> to be occupied as aforesaid. In the event of such an appointment, the auth 'zed number of the <br /> affected classified position, upon the direction of the City Manager, maybe ncreased by one, in <br /> which case the vacancy resulting therefrom shall be filled as provided b law or ordinance. <br /> Upon resignation or removal from an unclassified position before the termi ation of occupancy <br /> of a classified position the substitution of duties, and of compensation and enefits, shall cease. <br /> If at the time such substitution of duties ceases there is a vacancy in the auth rized number of the <br /> affected classified position or if none is then existent upon the occurrence of the first vacancy <br /> thereafter, at the direction of the City Manager the authorized number thereo may be reduced by <br /> one and such vacancy eliminated without appointment from any eligibility egister. During the <br /> continuance of substitution of duties as aforesaid, said classified positio may be modified, <br /> eliminated or otherwise affected the same, and in the same manner, as ifs ch substitution had <br /> not occurred, and an employee or officer may be suspended, demoted, or re oved or discharged <br /> for cause from the classified service the same, and in the same manner, as if aid substitution had <br /> not occurred whether the basis thereof arises out of or is connected with the substituted duties or <br /> otherwise.
