MANAGEMENT SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Management Information Services Division
MEMORANDUM 2013-4
November 18, 2013
MEMO TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Gerard J. Bauer, Assistant City Manager for Administration
Randy G. Aldrich, Manager, MIS Division
SUBJECT: Server n
e and Data Storage Upgrade for MIS
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that City Council approve the
attached resolution, authorizing the attached quote of Alexander Open Systems (AOS)
of $56,146.19 for the purchase and installation of Cisco Blade Servers and additional
EMC Data Storage capacity at the Civic Center.
BACKGROUND: This purchase is the second phase of the City's server virtualization
project and will increase capacity and performance in our server "farm". The CISCO
Unified Computing System (UCS) purchased in phase one is being expanded to handle
the City's growing computing demands. Phase one included EMC Storage Area
Network for data storage and this upgrade will expand storage and take advantage of
the increased performance capabilities of the EMC and CISCO systems. Recent
additions of software applications resulting in the need for more individual servers and
increased storage and file demand make this upgrade vital for continuing the current
level of service to the City.
Alexander Open Systems is the vendor used in the City's most recent purchase of virtual
server and storage equipment. In this instance, this vendor has secured the best
possible pricing from Cisco and EMC as the "preferred vendor" for the City's account.
AOS also has the installation and configuration knowledge of the City's current server
"farm". Because of these two facts, staff recommends a sole source purchase from
Alexander Open Systems for this project.
POTENTIAL OBJECTORS: None anticipated.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None.
STAFF REFERENCE: Gerard J. Bauer, Assistant City Manager (424-2801); Randy
Aldrich, MIS Manager (450-2239).
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS: The $56,146.19 cost for this project was anticipated
and included in the current "stub" fiscal year MIS Division budget.
2 Attachments
