Development Services Memorandum
#11-09
July 27, 2011
TO: Honorable Mayor Michael T. McElroy and City Council
FROM: Ryan McCrady, City Manager
Billy Tyus, Assistant City Manager
Randy Johner, Building Inspections Manager
SUBJECT: Chapters 67, 68, 69, and 70.1 City Codes
RECOMMENDATIONS: The Building Inspections Division of Planning and Building
Services would like to recommend changes to City Codes which will include adoption of
the 2009 versions of the International Building, Mechanical, and Fuel Gas Codes and the
2011 version of the National Electrical Code as model codes
BACKGROUND: The Building Inspections Division uses adopted codes as
guidelines for review of building plans and for inspections of new construction. We
currently use the 2006 versions of the Building, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, and the 2008
version of the Electrical Code. For commercial projects with a cost of work up to $2,000, the fee would
increase from $25 to $35
b. For commercial projects with a cost of valued at$2,000 to $3,000, the fee
would increase from$35 to $45
c. For installation of new furnaces, air conditioners, or water heaters (residential)
the fee would increase from $25 to $35 per unit
d. For new commercial signage permits, the fee would be assessed using the
same method as that used for any other commercial permit. For example, a
new sign valued from $0 to $2,000 would be assessed a $35 permit fee. In the
past, all signage regardless of cost was assessed a $25 per sign permit fee.
2. Rules for Concessions: We have collaborated with the Macon County Health
Department to develop a set of rules for those businesses that are classified in our
Zoning Ordinance as temporary restaurants (concessions). Some of the rules have
been enforced in the past but never were written into an ordinance. All rules were
