6. Garage. Currently, we have several items of property that are either stored in
the open on-site, stored off-site, or both. We have a church bus that transports
people to and from services. It is stored outside in a lot on Oakland Ave. We
have a church van used to transport our youth group, and to transport Decatur
Public School students to our after-school program, GUM Park. That van is
parked outside in our front parking lot. Our outdoor maintenance equipment
(mower, etc.) is stored off-site. We would like to construct a building to house
all of this equipment as well as general storage, but the location and size have
yet to be determined. There has also been talk about a joint venture with Good
Samaritan Inn to construct a garage on a lot they own, but would be
transferred to GUMC. GSI would then have off-site storage space in this
building. (Several location options are shown on the "Proposed"diagram.)
7. West parking lot improvements. We have a paved parking area on the west
side of Church Street that was the site of the former Lincoln School building.
9
We are considering re-paving, re-striping, and possibly lighting for this lot.
8. Boundary landscaping. We are considering using plantings (example
hedges or other plants), landscaping, or perhaps decorative fencing to define
our church boundaries. We believe this will improve the look of the area, help
control traffic flow, and help tie our properties together into one large campus.
9. Gate. We are considering installing a gate at the Marietta Street entrance to
our parking lot to reduce traffic cutting through the lot to avoid the traffic
signals at Marietta and Main. The gate would be closed except during church
services or events.
Grace United Methodist Church Petition for Rezoning from R-6 to PD Justification—Page 3 of 3
