The trenchless long lining process involves the insertion of a resin saturated felt liner from
manhole to manhole that hardens to repair the damaged pipe. Long lining differs from smaller
trenchless point lining because point lining repairs only repair a few feet around a damaged
section of pipe, whereas long lining the pipe repairs the entire pipe segment from manhole to
manhole. Long lining is the most cost effective approach for pipes that have many structural
deficiencies or significant damage. Once the lining is in place, it is pressed to fit tightly against
the walls of the sewer pipe by either water or air pressure. The liner is then heated to activate the
resin system, causing the pipe lining to cure and harden, thereby forming a new structural pipe
within the old damaged sewer pipe. During this process, excess resin is forced into cracks, joints
and irregularities of the old pipe, resulting in a bond between new and old pipe. When curing is
complete, private lateral lines are re-opened using a remote controlled cutting tool.
The 2010 Trenchless Long Lining Repairs Project will line approximately 11,600 lineal feet of
8", 10", 12", 18", 21 and 27" sanitary sewers at various locations throughout the City. The work
also includes lateral reinstatement, video inspection, sewer cleaning, mobilization and traffic
control. Work locations are provided on the Public Works Section of the City's website under
Contractor Project Bid Information, www.decaturil.gov/contractorinfo/contractorinfo.html.
Project Bid Review
The project plans and specifications were prepared by Engineering Division staff.
