i•
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES MEMORANDUM
No. 10-100
November 15, 2010
TO: Honorable Mayor Michael T.McElroy and City Council Members
FROM: Ryan P. McCrady, City Manager
Greg C. Crowe,Assistant City Manager
Vasudha Pinnamaraju,AICP,Environmental Planner
SUBJECT: Sustainable Decatur Plan
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends adoption of the"Sustainable Decatur"
plan document
BACKGROUND: In March of 2010 City Council approved an agreement with Teska Associates and
CNT as a consultant team to create the Decatur Area Sustainability Plan. Since the Consultant team was
from out of the area, Council also approved an agreement with Homer L. Chastain, a local engineering
firm,to act as a City liaison and engage the local community in the planning process.
Approximately 100 members of the community were involved in the planning process, making this a
truly collaborative effort. Teska presented the plan to the Council during a study session on November
1 St. Council showed unanimous support to move forward with the plan. Persons interested in seeing the
plan can visit the City's website at www.decaturil.gov and click the Sustainable Decatur link on the right
side of the page.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION:None
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Non-Profit Organizations, Other government entities within
Decatur, Surrounding municipalities,Educational institutions and the Community stake holders.
STAFF REFERENCES: If Council members have questions they may contact Vasudha Pinnamaraju at
424-2778 or vpinnamaraju@decaturil.gov.
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS: Staff would like to get started with the cross cutting projects as
soon as possible. No funds have been allocated for any projects listed in the plan. Once a neighborhood
is identified for Urban Core Demonstration Project, Staff would like to concentrate existing programs in
that neighbarhood.
