Public Works Memorandum
No. 2010-15
 DATE: February 24,2010
TO: Honorable Mayor McElroy and City C uncil Members
FROM: Ryan Y. McCrady, City Manager / /
Richard G. Marley, P.E., Public Works Director / /r
SUBJECT: Emergency Traffic Signal Repair for Route #36 and Route#121
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve tht attached resolution authorizing an
expenditure of$5,125.54 with Egizii Electric Inc., for the emergency repair of a traffic signal
mast arm at the intersection of Rt. #36 and Rt. #121.
PRIOR COUNCIL ACTION:
There has been no prior Council action on this item.
BACKGROUND:
On Wednesday February l Ot' at approximately 6:30 a.m., City staff became aware of a traffic
accident which severely damagect a traffic signal mast arm causing an imminent hazard to the
public. The mast arm, located at the southwest corner of Rt. #36 and Rt. #121, was struck by a
vehicle and knocked to the ground. City staff arrived on the scene to secure the damaged traffic
signal mast arm and eliminate any electrical hazards. Egizii Electrical, Inc. was contracted to
assist with the mast arm removal and perform the necessary repairs. Egizii repaired the damaged
wiring and the mast arm anchor bolts, and installed a mast arm supplied by the City to restore the
intersection for the night. Egizii then returned to install the remainder of the signals and make
final adjustments the following day.
Total cost for the repair work was $5,125.54 which exceeds the City's administrative purchasing
authority. This intersection is owned by the State and maintained by the City. It is anticipated
that the Illinois Department of Transportation will reimburse the City for the entire cost of the
repair.
POTENTIAL OBJECTON: There are no known objections to this request.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None
STAFF REFERENCE: Richard G. Marley, Public Works Director, Richard Borders,
Municipal Services Manager and Jerry Nihiser, Traffic and Parking Supervisor. Richard Marley
will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any questions of the Council on this
item.
Page 1
