Additional Engineering Services Required <br /> It is necessary for this work, and required by IDOT, that the City retain the services of a structural <br /> engineer to provide construction engineering assistance during the course of the project. The <br /> services provided by BWC have been more extensive than originally anticipated at the beginning <br /> of the project. Reasons for the increase expense include: <br /> • The micro-piling process is relatively new and required more specialized engineering review <br /> to assure the proper installation and strength of the piles. <br /> • The State's requirement that all detail drawings prepared by the contractor's steel fabricators <br /> (known as "shop drawings") be approved by the City's structural engineer was not fully <br /> anticipated in the original scope of services. <br /> Most of the major shop drawings have been processed and the micro-piling and structural <br /> scaffolding is in place and approved. With this work completed, BWC estimates that an <br /> additional $8,000 in authorized services will be required to see the project through to completion <br /> which should be in December 2009. <br /> Approximately$12,800 of the original $15,000 has been expended as of October 23, 2009. No <br /> funds have been expended without Council's authority. <br /> POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections to this resolution. <br /> INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Blank, Wesselink, Cook and Associates <br /> STAFF REFERENCE: Richard Marley, Director of Engineering and Infrastructure and Matt <br /> Newell, City Engineer. Richard Marley will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to <br /> answer any questions of the Council on this item. <br /> BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS: <br /> Budget Impact: <br /> Construction engineering services funding is provided in the General Capital Fund. The <br /> additional cost for the BWC agreement is $5,000 for a total authorized expenditure of$23,000. <br /> Staffing Impact: <br /> The Capital Improvement Plan has allocated staff time for managing the project.
