r
sewage from areas that cannot drain by gravity alone into the City's sanitary sewer system. The
station pumps sewage to an elevation that will allow it to drain into the City's gravity system. The
K-Mart pump station currently gathers sewage from the area surrounding Illinois Route 121 south
of Route 36 as shown on the attached map. The sewage is pumped to the City's gravity sewer ''
system serving the Baker Woods area, west of the airport. The City owns 19 sanitary sewer pump i
stations around the City.
Three major issues face the K-Mart pump station capacity and the potential service area south of
U.S. Route 36 along Illinois Route 121:
1. The pumping capacity of the existing station is not adequate to meet the sanitary sewer
demands that will result from continued future development.
2. If the capacity of the pump station is increased, then the force main that carries the sewage
from the pump station must be increased in size to handle the increased sewage flow from
the station. The current force main is 4" in diameter and may be increased to meet the
capacity requirements of future development.
3. The gravity sewer receiving the flow must have capacity to accept the sewage without
causing backups in area homes and businesses. The Baker Woods sewer system does not
currently have capacity to receive the higher sewage flow necessary to serve the full
development of the K-Mart pump station service area.
System Review Required
In order for development within the City limits to continue in the K-Mart pump station service area,
it will be necessary to provide sufficient sanitary sewage flow capacity. This capacity enhancement
alternative analysis is needed to resolve the three major problems identified above.
BGM proposes to:
1. Determine the limits of the K-Mart Pump Station service area.
2. Project future growth within the service area.
3. Present alternatives for providing adequate capacity to meet the projected growth.
4. Recommend a course of action.
BGM is a well respected local engineering firm that specializes in sanitary sewer design work.
They are currently under contract with the Sanitary District to design the proposed improvements to
the K-Mart Pump Station. The design work is currently on hold pending the results of the system
review.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections to this project.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Sanitary District of Decatur
STAFF REFERENCE: Richard G. Marley, Director of Public Works, and Matt Newell, City
Engineer. Richard Marley will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any
questions of the Council on this item.
Page 2
