Watershed Erosion and Sediment Inventory (Separate Box)
In 2003, an inventory of the Big and Long Creek watershed was done to estimate the average annual rate
of erosion and sedimentation. Statistically valid sampling units were selected that represent 10%of the
watershed.Field inventories were conducted on these units to assess current erosion conditions. This data
was then used to calculate the annual average sheet and rill, ephemeral, gully and streambank erosion.
This information from the sample units was expanded to calculate sediment delivery rates for each type of
erosion and the sediment transport factor for the watershed. Ultimately, the goal was to estimate the total
sediment load at the mouth of Big and Long Creek to Lake Decatur. The results are as follows:
Total Sediment Load Delivered=47,250-49,500 tons from 32,800 acres annually
SHEET AND RILL EPHEMERAL GULLY STREAMBANK
EROSION EROSION EROSION EROSION
80,974 TONs 31,300 Torrs 1,700 TONs 5,555 TONs
ANNUALLY, 119,SSO TONS OF SOIL ERODING IN BIG AND
LONG CREEK WATERSHED
, 45,000 TONS REACH 74,SSO TONS OF SOIL
LAKE DECATUR ARE RE-DEPOSITED
IN THE WATERSHED
2,250-4,500 TONS OF SOIL
FROM BEDLOAD MATERIAL
ANNUALLY,47,250-49,500 TONS OF 38,585 TONS OF SOIL
SOIL ARE DELIVERED ON AVERAGE TO CAN BE REDUCED
LAKE DECATUR WITH CONSERVATION
16
