Staff recommends an additional <br /> $32,217.00 be authorized as a contingency for a total project cost of$450,000.00 and that <br /> the Mayor be authorized to execute the contract, and the City Clerk to attest. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> Over the past several years, the City has received repeated drainage complaints in the <br /> Nickey Avenue area. Many of the complaints center on the inability of storm water to <br /> drain away from the area resulting in minor flooding at various locations. Through this <br /> contract, City Engineering proposes to install storm sewers and perform ditching in the <br /> area generally east of Nickey Avenue and north of William Street. This work will <br /> significantly improve storm drainage in the area. <br /> The project plans and specifications were prepared by Engineering Division staff. The <br /> project was advertised July 12, 2007, and bids were opened on July 30, 2007. The results <br /> for the letting are as follows: <br /> Compared to <br /> Engineer's Est. <br /> Bidder Bid Price Over (-Under) <br /> Engineer's Estimate $424,449.00 ---- <br /> Ace Contracting of Illinois, Inc. $404,479.80 (-4.70%) <br /> Entler Excavating Co., Inc. $417,170.50 (-1.71%) <br /> Barr&Robison Sewer <br /> & Excavating, Inc. $417,783.00 (-1.57%) <br /> Staff recommends that the City Council approve a contract with the second lowest <br /> responsible bidder, Barr&Robison Sewer&Excavating Company, Inc., to perform the <br /> Nickey Avenue Storm Drainage Improvements project. Barr has performed many similar <br /> projects for the City with satisfactory results. <br />
