Much information has been gathered and new information is constantly gained through the crime
analysis unit and the gang detective. The officers will need additional training in high risk traffic
stops, building clearing/team tactics, firearms and other use of force techniques. This training will be
conducted in house by trained instructors of the Emergency Response Team.
Several of the team members are certified bike patrol officers so additional training is not needed in
this area.
Who will supervise the proposed project? What steps will be taken to assure the project
will be successfully implemented?
Deputy Chief James Chervinko will have overall command of the Anti-Crime Team. There are also
three patrol sergeants assigned to the team who have been designated team leaders. Each project will
be documented as a Problem Oriented Policing project and maintained in the office of the Deputy
Chief of the Patrol Division. Monthl re orts will be forwarded to the Chief of Police.
What barriers or possible obstacles to implementation do you foresee?
The original obstacle was the possible lack of interest of the officers, however 34 officers applied for
the position and 22 members are assigned to the team.
I antici ate some roblems with lack of vehicles for the team members to use. '
How will you address these barriers?
We are looking for additional resources for the purchase of new vehicles; however, we will coordinate
with the Patrol Division and the Investigations Division to use any available vehicles to achieve our
mission. The City of Decatur is a possible future site for Weed and Seed Program. The Weed and Seed
Program and the current ACT in collaboration with Project Safe Neighborhoods should work well
together.
Are there any other special needs, tools or training that will be required to fully
implement this proj ect?
7
