Ne ell, P.E., City Engineer`2%� SUBJECT: Jasper Street Subway Rehabilitation, City Project 02-11 SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution awarding the contract for Jasper Street Subway Rehabilitation, City Project 02-11, to Otto Baum Company, Inc., as the lowest, responsible bidder in the amount of$553,660.07, and that the Mayor be authorized to execute the contract, and the City Clerk to attest. BACKGROUND: On October 18, 2004, the City Council approved an agreement with Homer L. Chastain & Associates to design improvements to the Jasper Street Subway. The proposed improvements include replacing the sidewalk and retaining walls along the road edge on both the north and south approaches to the structure. The north roadway will be replaced and the south roadway will receive an asphalt overlay. The iron railing will be refurbished and replaced. The project plans and specifications were prepared by Engineering Division staff. The project was advertised June 29, 2006, and bids were opened on July 20, 2006. The results for the letting are as follows: Compared to Engineer's Est. Bidder Bid Price Over(-Under) Engineer's Estimate $ 739,365.70 ---- Otto Baum Co., Inc. $ 553,660.07 (- 25.12 %) Christy-Foltz, Inc. $ 594,911.75 (- 19.54 %) Otto Baum Company, Inc., provided the low bid for the proposed work. Staff recommends that the City Council approve a contract with Otto Baum Company, Inc., to perform the Jasper Street Subway Rehabilitation project.
