SUMMARY <br /> This program is designed to a11ow the Decatur Police Department to be more <br /> efficient and effective in identifying areas of increased criminal activity and using <br /> funding for hireback officers on an overtime basis to address these areas of increased <br /> criminal activity. The hireback patrols may be in the form of gang suppression units, <br />' bicycle patrols, increased numbers of motorized patrols and neighborhood meetings. <br /> This program will also a11ow the Decatur Police Department to purchase <br /> additional X-26 Tasers which will enhance officer safety, reduce injuries to officers <br /> resulting from arrest scenarios as well as reduce injuries to citizens during arrest. <br /> II. REVI�W OF PROGRESS MADE <br /> The Local Law Enforcement Block Grants and now the Justice Administrations <br /> Grants have enabled the Decatur Police Department to focus additional enforcement <br /> efforts in areas of where crime is more prevalent and where crime has had a negative <br /> impact on the citizenry. Bicycle patrols, gang suppression units, traffic enforcement and <br /> additiona.l motorized are all examples of how hirebacks are used. H'ireback patrol have <br /> made an impact in areas where they are deployed. <br /> Purchase of the X-26 Tasers have greatly expanded the use of non-lethal <br /> technology thus reducing not only injuries to officers but also injuries to citizens. <br />
