Anderson Plaza
Decatur, IL 62523
RE: CITY OF DECATUR
City Project#-03 `-7
GARFIELD AVENUE BRIDGE REHABILITATION
Dear Mr. Nooden:
This letter is written in response to our meeting on November 29, 2005 regarding the repair of
the Gaeld Avenue structure.
As discussed, the configuration of the existing pier caps and bearings require the structure be
temporarily supported on either side of the existing piers to be replaced.
During the design process it became apparent the cost for installing and removing the
temporary supports along with rebuilding the concrete corbel bearing system was becoming a
significant portion of the cost of repairs. The cost for these items is estimated to be in the
range of$475,000 to $525,000.
Because of these costs, alternate methods of supporting the structure during repair and
alternate bearing configurations were evaluated.
Consideration was given to making the temporary supports permanent and removing the
existing bearing support assembly and pier. The bridge girders would then be supported
approximately 5 feet either side of the expansion joint. This system would provide substantial
cost savings; however, supporting a bridge in this manner is somewhat unconventional and
would require evaluation of the entire structure to be sure it would work.
Consideration was then given to making the temporary supports permanent, however,
providing additional structural steel framing between supports which would allow the bridge
girders to be supported at the original bearing support locations (see Enclosure 1). This
support method is estimated to cost in the range of$320,000 to $370,000, a savings of
$105,000 to $155,000.
2623 EAST PERSHING ROAD • P. O.
