The total number of units to be created over the next five
years is ultimately contingent upon the continued availability of public financing. In
recent months, significant changes have occurred in federal funding which negatively
impact the ability to create additional permanent supportive housing units. The Decatur
and Macon County areas have depended on the permanent housing bonus, known as
the Samaritan Initiative, as a major source of funds for new project development. In the
past four years, this resource was used to create and sustain permanent supportive
housing through four separate projects. However, under the 2005 Samaritan Fund
formula, the allocation for permanent supportive housing was cut by 85% to $32,579.
Pae 33
