,
. . ,
Mass Transit Memorandum
No. 03140-1 '
March 14, 2D05 II
TO: Honorable Mayor Osborne and Cit Council Members I
FROM: Steve Garman, City Manager
Paul McChancy, Mass Transit Administratar
/y ,
SUBJECT: Decatur Public Transit System "Youth Fare"
SUMIMARY Staff recommends that Council approve a Resolution to authorize
RECOMMENDATION: a change in bus fares for those age 5 through 18. The proposed
change would replace the Child's Fare and the Student Fare with a
single Youth Fare.
BACKGROUND: Currently there is a Child's Fare of 40 for children age 5 through
1 l, and a Student Fare of 60 which only applies to students,
through high school, with a valid ID, on school days. Those who
don't qualify for these fares must pay the adult fare of 75 C. Bus
drivers have always had difficulty determininwhether a passenger
is too old for the child's fare. The drivers have also had difficulty
explaining to passengers that the student fare is intended to be used
only by those actually going to and from school-the student fare
doesn't apply during summer school, or on Saturdays, or even after
normal school hours (i.e. going home from an after-school job).
(continued on reverse)
POTENTIAL Two public hearings were held to discuss this praposal. No
OBJECTION: negative comments were received. There are no known or
expected objections to this change.
INPUT FROM Richard Foiles, General Manager, DPTS
OTHER SOURCES:
STAFF REFERENCE: Paul McChancy, Mass Transit Administrator
BUDGET/TIME The proposed change would have no noticeable effect on Transit
IMPLICATIONS: System revenues. No additional staff time would be required.
