The fill quantities for the project were estimated prior to the demolition of the site. The failed
condition of the structures did not permit a complete inspection of the basement areas. Prior to
demolition, it did not appear as though significant excavations would be required under the entire
building footprint. With completion of the demolition, more exact measurements have been
made. The entire foot print was significantly excavated making the void area almost double the
original projection. This added area will push the final project costs to between $45,000 and
$50,000.
Constraints at the demolition site with limited access and the closeness of adjacent buildings and
a major highway, make the back fill work very difficult for City forces to complete given the
inexperience of the crews with this type of operation. Additional conflicts with the onset of
winter; major street sweeping due to the fall weather; and other year end work, make it very
difficult for City forces to be freed up to complete this proj ect.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objections to this resolution
and bid award.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: None
STAFF REFERENCE: Matt Newell, City Engineer, at 424-2747
The City Engineer, Matt Newell, will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any
questions of the Council on this item.
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS:
Funding for this project will come from the Planning Fund. The recommended low bid amount
is $25,570.00. Additional funding of up to $50,000 is recommended to fully complete the fill of
the site.
The project is scheduled to begin within 2 weeks and should be completed by the middle of
December, 2004.
Attach: 3
cc: John Smith, Assistant City Manager of Public Services
Dane Bragg, Assistant City Manager for Economic and Urban Development
Phil Wilhelm, Municipal Services Manager
Doug Nooden, Assistant City Engineer
Page 2
