Newell, P.E., City Engineer� <br /> SUBJECT: Shadow Lane Relief Sewer, City Project 2003-20 <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: <br /> An item on the agenda for the September 15, 2003, City Council Meeting is the authorization of <br /> an agreement for design services with Bainbridge, Gee, Milanski &Associates, Inc., (BGM) for a <br /> fee not to exceed $12,000 to design a relief sewer for the Shadow Lane area sanitary sewer <br /> system. <br /> Staff recommends that the City Council approve the attached agreement. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> In March 2002, the City Council approved an agreement with BGM to study the sanitary sewer <br /> system serving the Shadow Lane area (see the attached drawing). In December 2002, the <br /> completed study was presented to the City Council along with recommendations on a course of <br /> action that would ultimately restore reliability to the area sanitary sewer system. In June 2003, <br /> the City Council authorized a sump pump disconnection program for the Cresthaven Park <br /> neighborhood. During this meeting the Council directed City staff to work toward a more direct <br /> solution to the over flow problem plaguing the area. <br /> The sanitary sewer system in the MacArthur Road / Arbor Drive area services over 500 homes. <br /> Over the past 10 years, sanitary sewer backups and overflows have plagued the down stream <br /> portion of the sewer which extends down Wolf Road and Shadow Lane to an interceptor <br /> maintained by the Sanitary District of Decatur. The periodic overflows have caused sewage to be <br /> discharged into private homes and into nearby Steven's Creek. <br />
