Page 2
At a Study Session held on May 19th, the City Council indicated its concurrence to have staff ',
order the removal of sump pumps from the sanitary sewer. The Council was in agreement with '
providing some measure of reimbursement to Cresthaven Park residents. Council directed staff I
to proceed with the design of a sump pump drain line to service the neighborhood. These II
directives were in an effort to encourage area residents to disconnect sump pump drains from the
sanitary sewer and stay disconnected. Staff has proceeded in accardance with the direction ,
provided by Council. ',
At this time, the design of the proposed sump pump drain line is 50% complete. City
Engineering is prepared to send out notices to area residents informing them of the City
Council's decision and requesting them to state their interest in connecting to a proposed sump
pump drain line. This is in an effort to determine the service area of the proposed line. It is
anticipated that this project can be put out to bid in August and largely completed by November/
December, although final completion could extend until Spring 2004. The proposed drain line
will be placed in the boulevard area, between the curb and the sidewalk, since this will provide
the best all-weather access to the City's contractor and City maintenance crews. The City's
contractor will connect all drain lines that are at the curb at the time the work takes place.
Staff proposes to order Cresthaven Park residents to disconnect all sump pump drain lines from
the sanitary sewer within 60 days of being so notified. Notices from the Director of Engineering I
and Infrastructure should go out shortly after Council action on the reimbursement issue. A draft !,
letter is attached hereto for the information of the Council. Homeowners will be directed to '
extend their drain lines to the street or a nearby storm sewer manhole or inlet. Those lines
extended to the street will be connected by the City's contractor during the drain line installation
work.
POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS:
Other than the public comments that were presented at the May 19th, City Council Study ;
Session, there are no known objections. '
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: City Council and City Legal Department
4 - II
STAFF REFERENCE: Matt Newell, Crty Engmeer, at 24 2747
The City Engineer, Matt Newell, will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any
questions of the Council on this item.
