We actually saved 1758.08 tons of soil per year. � <br /> I feel this is still very good. Sheet and Rill erosion takes place on flat ground and is <br /> hardly noticeable. Most of this type of erosion can be addressed with conservation tillage <br /> practices. Adoption of these practices are increasing in the watershed even without our <br /> assistance. As a result, it is hard to tell how much Sheet and Rill erosion is being <br /> prevented. Most of our figures came from either waterways or filter strips that we <br /> installed. Overall I would say that we are actually saving more than 1758.08 tons per <br /> year, but that is all we can prove without a more detailed study. Plus, if you figure that <br /> each of our practices that were installed will last on the average at least 15 years, you will <br /> see that we are actually stopping 26,371.2 tons of soil from leaving those fields. <br /> The si�h goal was to reduce severely eroding streambanks by 1400 tons. We did <br /> not reach this goal. We looked at this goal in much detail at the beginning of the <br /> program. We actually called in a USDA-NRCS State Soil Scientist to look again at our <br /> stream bank problems. The State Soil Scientist and our committee agreed that even <br /> though there were some severely eroding stream banks along Sand Creek, it would not be <br /> cost effective to try to address the problems. Many of the places along Sand Creek that <br /> were eroding severely enough to warrant fi�ting them were deep in the woods and would <br /> cause more damage than the actual erosion to fix them. However, we did not abandon <br /> these projects. We met with several landowners and explained how they could use <br /> simple tree or grass plantings to stop the streambank from eroding. Many of these spots <br /> will have some sort of treatment on them sometime in future. <br /> The seventh goal listed in the report was to reduce Ephemeral erosion by 2000 <br /> tons per year. We met this goal and even exceeded it. According to our results our <br /> projects will stop 3760 tons per year. Again if we take into account the 15-year life <br /> span of the project we will save a total of 56,400 tons of soil from leaving the fields. <br /> Ephemeral erosion occurs where water starts to concentrate and remove soil from fields. <br /> It usually can be seen as a sma11 1 to 2 foot gully with variable widths. Most of our <br /> projects to stop ephemeral erosion are waterways, terraces and to some extent filter strips. <br /> The last goal was to reduce gully erosion by 435 tons per year. We again met <br /> and exceeded this goal. Our results showed that our projects saved a totai of 451 tons <br /> of soil per year. If we take into account again the 15-year life span of the project, we will <br /> save a total of 6,765 tons of soil from leaving the fields. Gully erosion occurs when such <br /> a high velocity of water starts to cut deeply into the soil. Gullies are usually greater than <br /> 3 feet in depth and the width varies. The projects that we use to stop gully erosion in this <br /> watershed were; structures, waterways and ponds. <br />
