Summary and Future Results <br /> If you look at the results of this report and the conclusion you will see that we met <br /> s'v� out of the eight goals that we set out for ourselves. Of the two that we did not reach <br /> Sheet and Rill erosion and Stream bank erosion, we came really close to achieving the <br /> results on Sheet and Rill erosion. If we had a chance to redo the Sand Creek Report that <br /> was given to the Council prior to voting to give us the money, we would probably take <br /> out the stream bank goal altogether. <br /> Overall, we ended up preventing 5,969.08 Tons of Soil from leaving the <br /> watershed. Projected out over the 15-year life span of the project we saved 89,536.20 <br /> tons of soil or roughly 4069 semi-trucks full of soil. In the feasibility study of Lake <br /> Decatur Watershed Management Alternatives for Sediment done in 1998 by <br /> Environmental Planning and Economics Inc. for the City of Decatur, it was determined <br /> that it cost $4.59 per ton to remove one ton of soil from the bottom of the lake. This <br /> means v�e saved the Cit�� $4]0,971.16 in dredgin� costs in the Sand Creek basin. <br /> Of the $75,000 allotted to the Sand Creek Watershed Project, we only spent , <br /> $27,784.88. The Federal and State Government programs combined to spend $45,024.65 ' <br /> in the Sand Creek Watershed. For a total of$72,809.53, which is very close to the � <br /> $75,000 received from the City of Decatur. This tells me that if the Federal and State <br /> programs where not used in this watershed we would have needed the $75,000.00 <br /> received from the City of Decatur to obtain the same results. t�'e where able to save <br /> $47,215.12 of the Cit�� of Decatur's money by using Federal and State Cost-share <br /> programs. <br /> We �re recommending to the City of Decatur that the $47,215.12 dollars that <br /> was saved in Sand Creek Watershed basin be eztended for further projects in Sand <br /> Creek and to add Finley Creek Watershed to the cost-share program. The USDA- <br /> NRCS and Finley Creek Watershed Committee are in the final stages of determining <br /> what would be needed to lesson the sediment being deposited at the mouth of Finley <br /> Creek. Instead of the SWCD asking for more money to do work in Finley Creek, we <br /> would like the opportunity to spend the remaining Sand Creek money in that area a1so. If <br /> it is determined that more money is needed we will ask the City at that point in time. <br /> Also any interest that was collected off of the $75,000 while in the SWCD account has <br /> been put towards more projects. No money was spent in administration costs. Our <br /> recommendation should save the City money in the long run. Any soil that we keep out <br /> of the lake now will be that much less that will have to be dredged in the future. <br /> I would like to ta.ke this opportunity to thank the City of Decatur, Sand Creek <br /> Watershed Committee, USDA-NRCS personnel both local and state, Macon County <br /> SWCD staff and the landowners in the Sand Creek Watershed who all helped in making <br /> this a very successful project. <br />
