- PUBLIC HEARING MINUTES -
FEBRUARY 5, 2002 page 2
VII. Questions and Comments:
L Why does ADA van and taxi service end when the buses stop running, since the
taxis continue to run all night anyway? Answer: The ADA van and taxi seivice is
supposed to be complementary to the bus system, to offer disabled passengers the
same transportation service as the bus system provides. So both systems end at the
same time.
2. How do you handle complaints about service? Answer: Any complaint about the
buses or the van and taxis should be directed to us. Please call either Geore Slnith or
Richard Foiles.
3. I explained to people who contacted me (Karen Zaiz, SAIL) that the new rate for
ADA rides is fair based on my experience with the cost of providing transportation
for the disabled.
4. Please be careful with where bus stops are located. Soine stops today are not
wheelchair accessible.
5. Service now is really good and going to 30 ininute service on inost routes «ill be
even better.
6. The bus drivers are really helpful.
7. Overall the proposed changes are veiy good. Sometimes, other City offices don't
consider public transit when they inake decisions. Streets are closed without
considering the buses.
8. People park in some bus stops, blocking the stop and inaking the bus stop out in
traffic for passengers. The City should stripe the street at those bus stops to keep
people fiom parking there.
9. I liked the free bus service that was offered during the Christmas shopping season
several years ago. That was a good promotion. Also, there was a free raffle for
passeners who rode the buses during that tiine.
10. Fare increases aren't popular, but they are needed and overdue,
1 l. Have you considered bus service to Mt. Zion? Answer: The consultant
contacted Mt. Zion about extending service from the airport plaza area down to the
Village. The Village would have to subsidize this seivice since it is outside of
Decatur city liinits. Mt. Zion wasn't interested.
12. With the changes in the emphasis of the Economic Development Corporation
there inay be a better chance in the future for cooperation between Decatur and Mt.
Zion, or other sma11 inunicipalities.
13. Can a bus stop anywhere on its route, or only at inarked stops? Answer: We
plan to limit stops to just the inarked stops. But if the driver missed your stop, the
driver should let you off at the next safe location, even if that isn't a marked stop.
14. Will new bus sto signs, with new route numbers, be erected alonthe routes?
Answer: Yes, we will be putting up all new bus stop signs.
15. I had used the E. Mound route to get to Cub Foods on Pershing Rd. The new
routes will make ine go downtown to transfer to get to Cub Foods. Response: We
can look at the new routes to see if there is some way to connect those routes (i.e. at
there northeastern ends) so that you can transfer there instead of going downtown to
transfer.
