DECATUR PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM
- PUBLIC HEARING MINUTES -
FEBRUARY 6, 2002
(ATTENDANCE: 9 citizens See sign-in sheet.)
I. Welcome and Overview of the Transit Study: Paul McChancy
II. Explanation of Route Restructuring;
1. New Route Names and Numbers: Richard Foiles
2. Explanation of New Routes and Frequency of Service: Kathy Moore with George
Smith
-----Comments and Questions:
a. Will the bus stop at St. Mary's Hospital's front door? Answer: No. The Hospital
has placed a bus shelter at the erd of their parking lot, and that is where the bus inust
stop. They may be moving that shelter soon.
b. Will the trolley routes change, too? Answer: No, the trolleys are really a separate
systein, so the trolley routes won't change when the other bus routes change.
c. Will the new South Shores route go down martin Luther King Jr. Dr. (MLK)?
Answer: Yes, that bus will use MLK both ways.
d. What will be the closest route to Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH)?
Answer: The Monroe route will go down the west side of DMH and the Water route
will go down N. Main St., close to the hospital. Since DMH got the City to close
Union and Hay Streets, we no longer can have a bus go to the hospital's front door.
e. When will these changes occur? Answer: The target date for all of these changes
is May 1 st, when the new transfer center opens.
f. Will there still be a transfer point at the Northgate Plaza? Answer: Yes, two routes
will connect at that transfer point.
III. New Service Hours: Richard Foiles
IV. Transit System Improvements: Richard Foiles
V. Transit System Expenses: Richard Foiles
-----Comments and Questions:
1. The public needs to be informed that ane of the praposed chanes is the
elimination of school tripper routes.
2. Why will the trolleys continue to run if you can't afford to run other services, like
the school trippers? Answer: One of the main reasons for eliminating the school
trippers is that we don't have the extra vehicles, in good condition, that this service
requires. If we kept the old buses for this service, they would require lots of
expensive maintenance to keep them running. Also, the trolleys are really a separate
system, serving a different purpose, so we can't trade trolley service for school
trippers.
3. How inany students ride the buses? For every student there are usually parents
and grandparents who would be interested in this change. Answer: I don't have that
figure with ine.
