CITY OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND JUSTIFICATION This project involves a wide variety of tasks, including the purchase of one service truck, the construction of a canopy over the fueling island,the purchase of bus stop isgns and shelters, etc. Following is a description and justification for each task: 11.32.09 Acquire Bus Route Signing($ 7,200): Purchase signs and posts to replace all signs at bus stops. The consultant study on bus routes and schedules pointed out that great improvement is needed in transit signing.' There are three different transit signs in use at bus stops. Some of the oldest are faded and rusted, and difficult to r.ead. Others do not have the System's phone number displayed, or the number is difficult to find. And some display an inconect route number. The consultant study has recommended that new signs be installed which are more informative and easier to read. Also, the placing of new signs should be coordinated with the implementation of new routing and new route numbers recommended by the consultant. 11.32.10 Acquire Bus Passenger Shelters ($ 16,200): Purchase additional bus stop shelters and replacement shelter sections. Transit's stock of shelters and replacement sections has been completely depleted. The spares were used to replace shelters damaged or destroyed in vehicle accidents, or damaged by vandalism. There are no shelters now in stock, and there are several re uests for new shelters. The placing of new shelters should be q coordinated with the implementation of new routing recommended by the consultant. , 11.42.06 Acquire Shop Equipment($ 8,000): Purchase maintenance equipment. Proposed for purchase is one vehicle air conditioning service center. This equipment would a11ow the maintenance staff to fizlly service the air conditioning units on all of our vehicles,buses and service vehicles. Without this equipment, vehicles must be taken out of service and sent to a vendor for these repairs. Doing air conditioning servicing in-house will result in reduced operating costs and less loss of vehicle service. 11.42.11 Acquire Support Vehicles ($ 40,000): Purchase one service truck. Transit needs to replace one old service truck that is in very poor condition- 1979 Ford F350 truck with utility box body,used to tow buses. Transit proposes to replace this with a 5-ton(approx.) truck with rear tow bumper and front push bumper, utility box body, small crane, front winch and"quick start"unit. This truck is needed to tow buses, to service and restart buses on city streets, to assist at accident scenes, to haul and place passenger shelters, to place bus stop signs and posts, etc. Because of the poor condition of the existing truck,private tow trucks are often employed to tow transit vehicles, at considerable expense.
