Ratekin, Assistant City Engineer <br /> SUBJECT: Annual Alley Restoration Program,Annual Street Base Failure Repairs <br /> Proposed Addition to City Project 2001-24 <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: <br /> , <br /> It is recommended by staff that the City Council approve the attached resolution and extra work <br /> order authorizing the addition of two projects to the Annual Street Reconstruction Project. The <br /> projects are the Annual Alley Restoration Project and the Annual Street Base Failure Repair. <br /> These projects have a combined total amount of$114,985 and it is proposed that these be added, <br /> by change order, to the existing contract the City currently has with Dunn Company for the <br /> Annual Street Reconstruction Project. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> The Annual Alley Restoration Project is a new initiative proposed by the Department of <br /> Engineering and Infrastructure to improve the condition of alleys in the City. This year the <br /> project will mainly focus on restoring alleys that are currently paved and experience non <br /> residential traffic requiring a paved surface. The alleys that will be targeted by this project have <br /> deteriorated beyond the reach of normal maintenance. Depending upon the condition of the <br /> existing surface one of two restoration processes may be used. The first process generally <br />' consists of milling the existing surface along with a portion of the base to restore the road base. <br /> The second process would be to till or mix the existing surface into the base. Once this is <br /> completed the surface is graded and then compacted. In both processes the alley is then overlaid <br /> with 2 inches of asphalt. Additionally, in both processes, if it is determined that the existing base <br /> is inadequate, work will be performed to strengthen the base. <br /> The Annual Street Base Failure Repair project consists of full depth patching of various street <br /> sections that have failed. This work is normally done at isolated spots on roads that do not <br /> currently need major resurfacing. The objective of this project is to lengthen the life of a <br /> pavement by repairing areas of significant damage. <br />
