E., Cit� Engineer� SUBJECT: Designating Portions of Cantrell Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive as a Class II Truck Route SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: The City's Traffic and Parking Commission has recommended to the City Council that the following streets be added to the City's Class II truck route system: • Cantrell Street - Between Franklin Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, • Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive - Between Cantrell Street and Gault Street. Staff recommends that the City Council approve the attached Ordinance designating the above streets as Class II truck routes. BACKGROUND: In accordance with State law, unless otherwise prohibited, City streets allow access for trucks up to 73,280 lbs. in weight distributed over 5 axles. Designation as a Class II truck route increases the allowable weight to 80,000 lbs. along with some size increases to the truck. On January 8, 2003, the City's Traffic and Parking Commission recommended the approval of a request by Hogan Grain to designate portions of Cantrell Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive as Class II truck routes. This request was to enable better access from the south to Hogan Grain's trucks accessing their grain elevator located near the northwest corner of Martin Luther King and Gault Street.
