COUNCIL COMMUNICATION FORM
Engineering & Infrastructure Memorandum
NO. 2002 - 57
August 5, 2002
TO: Honorable Mayor Howley and City Council
FROM: Steve Garman., City Manager
Stephen Swanson, P. E., Director of E & I
Matthew C. Newell, P. E., City Engineer,c,
SUBJECT: Class II Truck Routes
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended by staffthat the following City streets be designated as Class II truck routes:
• Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive - Between Eldorado and Gault Streets;
• Gault Street - Between Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Jackson Street;
• William Street - Between Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Hilton Street;
• Calhoun Street - Hickory Street to the north end;
• Hickory Street - Between Calhoun and Illinois Streets; and,
• Illinois Street - Between Hickory Street and Garfield Avenue.
BACKGROUND:
In accordance with State law, unless otherwise prohibited, City streets allow access for trucks up
to 73,280 lbs. in weight distributed over 5 axles. Designation as a Class II truck route increases
the allowable weight to 80,000 lbs. along with some size increases to the truck. Most trucks
making deliveries in and through the City are loaded up to 80,000 lbs. to improve efficiency. In
early 2001, several requests were made of the City to expand the Class II truck route system on
City streets to facilitate 80,000 truck access to area businesses. The truck routes listed above
were enacted temporarily through a 90 day authorization from the Police Chief as allowed under
Chapter 34, Section 7 of the City Code. These authorizations were made to maintain truck
access to Clarkson Grain Company at 518 East Gault Street, the Herald and Review at 601 E.
William Street, and Woare Builders Supply at 1595 N. Calhoun Street. Additional truck route
designation is requested for the 600 block of East William Street to accommodate truck access
from Martin Luther King, Jr. drive to the Herald and Review.
