The County of Macon is hereby petitioning the Mayor, City Council, and Plan '
Commission of Decatur, Illinois for a Special Use Permit to allow the siting and
operation of the new Decatur/Macon County Animal Shelter.
BACKGROUND
The existing animal shelter operated by Macon County is in disrepair, has inadequate
space, and desperately needs to be replaced. The current shelter is approximately 5,500
square feet of which 3,500 square feet is utilized for the boarding of animals.
The Macon County Board has actively sought a new facility Decatur/Macon County Animal
to house animal control and animal shelter activities for the Shelter Foundation Members
last several years. In the past year, the Board has appointed
an advisory committee, hired an architect, and was Robert Causey, President
instrumental in organizing the Decatur& Macon County Charles Bainbridge, Vice Pres.
Animal Shelter Foundation. Candace Baker, Secretary
William Gebhart, Treasurer
The Foundation is comprised of public off'icials and private
citizens. As identified in the Foundation Mission Directors
Statement, this organization will contribute funds to the Ren Carlson
County to assist in the construction and operation of the 7ohn Snyder
new animal control/shelter facility. Additional goals of the chard Lockmiller
Foundation include increasing the life expectancy of local Martha Taylor
animals and helping to provide citizens a higher level of Beth Hughes
service in selecting and maintaining adoptable pets. The Walt Dannewitz
facility will be owned and operated by the County. The Bill Williams
Foundation will not directly participate in its operations Shelly Stevens, DVM
except for ongoing education functions.
PROJECT COSTS AND TIMELINE
The preliminary cost estimate for the proposed facility is $3 million. It is the County's
desire to provide the land for this facility, $20,000 for architectural work, and technical
support during the necessary permitting processes. The remaining costs associated with
this project will be generated by a capital fundraising effort by the Shelter Foundation. It
is anticipated that construction of the facility would be completed in two years.
PROPERTY INFORMATION
Macon County owns three tracts of property that were formally part of the Adolf Meyer
Mental Health Clinic (See Exhibit 1). These tracts were formally deeded to the County in
April of 1994.
Special Use Permit Appliccdion Page 1
