COUNCIL MEMORANDUM
#2001-OS
Apri124, 2001
TO: Honorable Mayor Howley and City Council Members
FROM: Steve Garma rty Manager
RE: Chicago Bear Summer Camp
For the past few weeks a community group known only as the Welcome Home Bears
Committee have been meeting to further the Decatur/Millikin chance to house the summer camp
of the Chicago Bears. The group is composed of representatives of the following:
Millikin University
Decatur Park District
Convention and Visitors Bureau
Chamber of Commerce
Economic Development Corporation
Herald and Review
City of Decatur
Lori Kerans of Millikin University has been the "hands on" lead to work with the Bears
organization. Jesse Price of Millikin and Denene Wilmeth of the Convention and Visitors Bureau
have co-chaired the group and coordinated various assignments. Mayor Howley has been a
leader in the group and served as spokesman.
There is more that isn't known about Decatur/Millikin chances than what is known. We
do know, however, that we are still "in the hunt" and need to continue to mamize our chances I
to attract the summer camp.
Enclosed is an economic impact study (Attachment C) which was done by Hill & I
Knowlton, a nationally known public relations/advertising group, that has a sports marketing
department in the organization. Illinois Power put the group in contact with Hill& Knowlton and '
paid for the study, which measures the community benefit of the summer camp. The report
speaks for itself. '
