EXCERPTS FROM <br /> MINUTES OF THE MEETING <br /> OF THE <br /> TRAFFIC AND PARKING COMMISSION <br /> Wednesday, October 11, 2000 <br /> ITEM#4 Staff request for stop signs at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Silas Street. <br /> Newell received a complaint from a resident in the area that too many accidents were occurring <br /> at this intersection. A review of the accident history showed there have been four accidents in <br /> the past two years. Staff recommends that stop signs be placed at the intersection facing Silas <br /> Street. He recommends placing the signs facing Silas Street on the same principle as in the last <br /> item, because Silas carries less traffic than does Cleveland. There is currently a yield sign at <br /> Silas and Lincoln Avenue. Yield signs assign right-of-way and may work in some areas, but they <br /> may not. He feels more comfortable with placing a stop sign, because stop signs are more <br /> appropriate where there are physical accidents that have occurred. <br /> Sober believes yield signs would be appropriate where sight distance is good so that drivers can <br /> keep going if there is no oncoming traffic. If you put a yield sign at an intersection where there is <br /> a sight hazard, then he believes an accident could occur. <br /> Moore would like to see if there should be a stop sign at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and <br /> Silas Street. <br />' Newell will research that issue. He could not put a stop sign up without coming to the <br /> Commission or having the Police Chief do it. If there is an obvious public safety issue, he does <br /> not require a petition before stop signs are installed. Otherwise, he asks for a petition to get a <br /> consensus of the residents who live in the area. <br />� It was moved and seconded (Moore / Ryan) to accept staff recommendation to install stop signs <br /> at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Silas Street facing Silas.
