That memo explained the current responsibilities of the Forestry Section. The
information attached to this memo illustrates the mowing component of those responsibilities.
The attached list of properties and their estimated size shows that we mow almost 200 separate
locations which total approximately 220 acres. We currently have two (2) large area tractor
mowers and one (1) riding mower plus one (1) mower that is used as a large area mower in the
first half of the mowing season and as a boom-arm mower to mow ditches, slopes, and behind
guardrails in the second half of the season. We have one pickup and one temporary (one to three
person) seasonal crew which we add one full time employee to when the situation dictates. The
Sta.te of Illinois uses the same numbers of equipment to mow their grass two to three times per
year. Our mowing would be much simpler if our areas were not so far flung and separate from
each other. The stars on the enclosed map list only the major areas for which we are now
responsible.
In order to mow all of the weed violation locations, all of the Near North lots twice per month,
and mow twice per month all of what the State now mows on Route 36 and Route 51 south of the
lake, we would need the two additional tractors, two new full time positions, and the sundry
pickups, mowers, trailers, and funding for the temporary summer positions. The funding for this
expansion of our operations is shown in the two Form 3 requests that I have submitted. I would
like to make the point once again that the resources listed in these requests are the MINIMUM
required to meet the mowing schedules we have discussed.
xc: Bruce McNabb, Public Works Director
Phillip Wilhelm, Municipal Services Manager
