' ' Page 2
Wenneger agrees that the City should have taken the parking off long ago if it is a safety issue.
He added that community support is built when everyone is invited, and the Commission should
include everyone in the area.
Ryan stated that these people could be notified when it goes to the City Council.
Newell stated that residents should be able to park anywhere in the neighborhood they want. The
people in this situation will still be able to park, but they will have to park on the east side of the
street. He believes that residents should have a strong say as to the parking on their street. An
example is the parking problem on East Main Street. The people wanted to park on the street but
the Fire Department felt it was a safety issue. The parking was allowed to remain because of the
voice of the residents. A lot of weight was not given to the residents a block away. The
Commission just considered the voice of the residents on that street. Parking in front of your
house is an asset to the property. Newell does not believe the other people in the neighborhood
should be allowed to decide if parking should be left on your street or in front of your house. If
notice is given to everyone in the neighborhood and they show up at the meeting to voice their
opposition to the people who live on the street, who would the Commission side with?
Nordholm argued that there still are extenuating circumstances in this situation.
Gillen believes this is not a neighborhood issue, but a residential issue on one street. It is more
isolated.
Moore believes this is a parking issue, not a traffic issue, but it is still a safety issue. He
suggested that a policy be designed, written or unwritten, unless there is an unusual situation.
Nordholm added that when the Soy Capital Bank asked that traffic be changed on Church Street
to accommodate their customers, they did not invite the entire neighborhood to the meeting.
Newell would agree to table the matter until the other residents are notified if the Commission ,
suggests that they be at the meeting to add their input.
It was moved and seconded (Gillen / Sober) that parking be removed from the west side of the
1200 block of Florida Avenue. There being no one opposed, the motion carried.
Newell will have the matter brought to the City Council.
