tiE•Dca
c
u .
[LINOS
December 15, 1998
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 98 - 87
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council ,
FROM: James L. Williams, Jr., City Manager '
' Bruce A. McNabb, Director of Public Works
Matthew C. Newell, Traffic Engineeru I
SUBJECT: Ordinance Authorizing the Establishment of Angled Parking i,
in the 300 to 500 Blocks of East Main Street I
At the October meeting of the Traffic and Parking Commission, the Commission approved a I'
request from City staff to recommend the installation of angled parking on a portion of Main I
Street between Franklin Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. I
In an effort to increase available parking in the downtown area, staff has determined that I
angled parking can safely be provided on a portion of East Main Street, east of Franklin Street. ',
This will add between nine and ten spaces of on-street parking. The angled parking improvement I
will only extend down a portion of Main Street since the street narrows somewhat, as shown on
the attached drawing. '
This proposal is consistent with earlier pazking recommendations set forth by the Downtown
Decatur Council. I
Staffwill be present to answer any questions the Council may have.
