ITEM#6 Staff request to install angled parkin on East Main Street between Franklin and
Martin Luther King Streets.
Newell advised that staff is requesting the opportunity to try angled parking on Main Street
similar to what was done on Prairie Street to the north. Staff is proposing to try angled parking
on the west end of 300 to 500 East Main on the south side of the street. The 300 to 500 blocks
of East Main are a few feet wider than Prairie on the west end and a few feet narrower than
Prairie on the east end.
Spangler asked if angled parking creates more traffic accidents than parallel parking.
Newell stated parking is more difficult and dangerous with angled parking. There have been no
increase in accident rates seen from angled parking changes in the downtown area, probably
because the City is more selective of where the angled parking is permitted.
Moore does not believe this street has much traffic on it.
Newell advised that traffic counts indicate that it has as much traffic as Prairie.
It was moved and seconded (Ryan/ Spangler)to accept staff recommendation that angled spaces
be installed on East Main Street between Franklin and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. There being
no one opposed, the motion carried.
Newell added that if problems appear because of the angled parking, it will be reevaluated.
