Eacerpts from Minutes
Item#3 Request to make permanent the temporary closure of Union Street south of Main
Street.
Newell stated that the Police Department put a fence up on this street, which is little more than an
alley, on a 90-day street closure action. This happened about a year ago. A fence was put up by
the Main Liquor Store to discourage the congregation of people in the street and sunounding
alleys. This closure has essentially stopped the people from hanging around the area. Staff
recommends the closure be made permanent. It took a year to bring this matter to the
Commission because Commander Mowen wanted to wait until he had collected letters of support
or opposition from each and every business and resident in the immediate area. There have been
no complaints about the fence.
Hansen reported that the Fire Department would have no problem with responding to
emergencies if the street is closed.
It was moved and seconded (Moore/Bauer) to accept staff recommendation that this closure be
made permanent. There being no one opposed, the motion carried.
