Sands,Interim City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb, Director of Public Works
Matthew C. Newell, Trafic Engineer
SUBJECT: Permanent Closure of Union Street South of Main Street
Attached is a resolution authorizing the permanent closure of Union Street south of Main
Street. On temporary Police Department authorization, a fence was erected to close this street
adjacent to the West Main Liquor store.
The temporary closure was installed at the request and consent of St. Paul's School, West
Main Liquor and area businesses who were concerned with the crime and vandalism occurring to
their property largely stemming from patrons of the West Main Liquor store. This behavior has
been significantly reduced since the fence's installation.
Letters of support from St Paul's Lutheran School, West Main Liquor, and other area
businesses were provided in the August Traffic and Parking Commission packet. The Traffic and
Parking Commission has recommended the permanent closure of Union Street adjacent to the
West Main Liquor store.
The proposed permanent closure of this alley will consist of the fence that is currently in
place with the addition of some reflective signs. The esting traiic barriers may be removed
once signs have been installed on the fence.
Staff will be present to answer any questions the Council may have.
