Foreword
Places and People in Old Decatur is concerned with two
things: first, with some presently existing structura located
wi[hin Decatur's current city Gmi[s that were built before
1900; and second, with some of the people or events related
to thos structures. Zonta Club of Decatur presents it at this
time as its contribution to the local celebration of our nation's
bicentennial.
Concurrent with the pubGcation of this volume is the
presentation of five registers of data on Old Decatur structures
to the Decatur Public libnry for use in iu local history room.
These registers were compiled between November, 1973, and
July, 1975, by members of the Public Affairs Committee of
Zonta with the assistance and cooperation of the Macon
County offices of assessor and recorder of deeds, the Decatur
Public Library, and Decatur newspapers as well as many inter-
ested citizens. Charlotte Meyer was responsible for basic
i research. Readers who desire additional data on structures in- I
! cluded in this volume or on structures which were omitted
i because of lack of space are referred to the registers at the II
' lbrary.
No defense is made of judgments regarding which struc-
tures to include. There is an asierisk to designate structures
which also appear in the Interim Report of An Inventory of
Architecture before World War II in Macon County prepared
by the Illinois f-iistoric Structures Survey of Octaber, 1974;
however, architectural merit was the chief criterion for in-
clusion in that report which was done under the direction of
Dr. Paul E. Sprague,a well-known architectural historian. The
. criteria for inclusion in this volume have been age of the struc-
ture and relation to historic persons or events as well as report-
ed architectural interest. Since no meznber of the writing
committee is a professional architect, aRist, author, or
historian, information given has been gleaned from the com-
pilation of data in the registers.
