, Pedestrian Underpass Feasibility Study June 17, 1997
East Marietta Street and East Condit Street
water seepage should be investigated and repaired thus preventing ice buildup in the
winter. Additional overhead lighting couId be installed on both the south and north side of
the underpass to provide better night-time visibility. Fencing, or retaining wall, could be
erected along both railroad right-of-way lines to prevent pedestrians from crossing the
railroad above the underpass.
Alternate 5$
Sidewalk Modification to Underpass Structure Condit treet '
As shown in Exhibit J, the sidewalk on the south side would be raised above the street to a
lesser grade on the surface of the walk. The grade would be under 5 percent, thus
allowing the elimination of landings every thirty feet. As shown, a concrete barrier will be
constructed and new sidewalk will be placed behind the wall. The height of the wall will
vary from nine inch curb at the top of the underpass to about three feet six inches at the
low point. The sidewalk will follow along the top of the barrier.
Installation of the concrete barrier will reduce the pavement width from 30.2 feet to 29. 3
feet, still above mrn;t„um requirements for width. A four-foot high chainlink fence would
be placed on top of the wall to provide pedestrian protection.
Lighting requirements, fencing of the railroad right of way and sealing of water seepage as
noted in Alternate SA would apply to Altemate SB.
This alternate will provide ADA accessibility but will not meet requirements for bicycle
use due to width.
iternate SC
Street nd Sidewalk Modification to Underpass Stnct,re Condit Street
As shown in Exhibit J, modifications can be made to the sidewalk to have it comply with
ADA criteria and provide width for bicycle use. In this alternate the sidewalk on the
south side of Condit Street is increased to ten feet in width and the sidewalk on the north
side is eliminated. The centeriine of the roadway would be moved north and would be
transitioned outside of the underpass limits. A concrete barrier would be placed along the
north retaining wall to prevent vehicles from hitting the retaining wall and transitioned into
the existing curb at both ends of the underpass.
Moving the centerline of the roadway will require removal and replacement of the existing
bituminous overlay. In addition, as noted in Alternate SB, drainage structures will be
modified or relocated. The sidewalk on the north side would be ternunated away from the
WYP Corporation Paae '
