Pedestrian Underpass Feasibility Study June 17, 1997
East Marietta Street and East Condit Street
repaired area appears in need of additional repair. The south waIl, west of the bridge, has
one section that includes a horizontal crack just above the sidewalk. The crack has water
seeping through the wall.
In the area of the bridge, a single span thru-plate rder bridge carrying four tracks of the
Illinois Central Railroad, it was noted that water has seeped down the face of the
abutments from the joint between the bridge deck and back wall. It appears that the
original waterproofing and/or deck joint in this area has failed_
It is suggested, should any modifications be made to the underpass, that a structural study
of the noted problems be completed on the underpass prior to any design phase.
A.s noted, there are five foot sidewallcs on both sides. Both sidewaiks are a continuation
of walks from both east and west of the structure as we11 as sidewalks from Lonview
Place and the Phoenix Park area.
Three aiternates are being considered for improving the existina Condit Street underpass.
Alternate SA
Trimal lodification to Undercass Structure. Condit Street
As shown in Exhibit J, the width of the existing sidewalk on both sides of the underpss
does not meet American Disabilities Act criteria. Also, the sidewalks do not meet width
criteria for bicycle use. The profile of the sidewalk is approximately parallel to the street
profile, thus having a maximum grade of about seven percent. This percent grade is below
the minimum required by ADA, however, there are no landings or handrails to assist
handicapped use.
Present lighting in the underpass is by overhead lighting mounted on wood poles along the
north side of Condit Street and ornamental light poles along the north side of Longwood
Place west of the railroad.
During site survey work it was noted that, as shown in Exhibit I, there is no fencing or
wall along the east or west right of way line of the Illinois Central Railroad north of
Condit Street. A sidewalk is located behind the north retaining wall west of the railroad
and a well worn path is located behind the north retaining wall east of the ra.ilroad parallel
to Condit Street Several pedestrians were observed crossing the railroad above the •
underpass.
Minimal modifications could be made to the underpass to improve safety.
