Pedestrian Underpass Feasibility Study June 17, 1997
East Marietta Street and East Condit Street
dlternate 3
Underpss Structur Marietta Street - Concrete Pipe Construction.
Alternate 3 will be installation of 12 foot inside diameter rei.nforced concrete pipe by the
mining and jacking method. The installation of the concrete pipe, as shown in Exhibit E,
will minimize any interruption to train service. A floor would be poured in the pipe to
provide a walkway and lighting would be installed by mounting conduit and light fixtures
on the curved wall of the pipe.
Construction of the ramps and drainage would be similar to that noted in Alternate 2.
Blternate 4
Overass Structure. Marietta Street
As shown in Eibit F, a pedestrian overpass would consist of a bridge set on two
abutments and include stairs and ramps to ga.in access to the bridge. The ramps would
meet ADA criteria but would not meet width requirements for bicycle access. The ramps
would be constructed in a spiral effect to gain elevation to the bridge. As noted, the
bottom of the bridge will be 23 feet above top of rail. The bridge could be constructed in
a normal steel beam a.nd concrete deck method, as shown in Eibit G, or a prefabricated
structure that would be set in place, as shown in Exhibit H. Securifiy fencing wouid be
placed on the bridge and sides of the ramps. Lighting would also be placed on the bridge.
dlternate 5
Modification to L7nderpass Stn.icture Condit Street
According to plans furnished by the City of Decatur, the Condit Street underpass was
constructed around 1936. The underpass, shown in Exhibit I, extends from just east of
Clinton Street to just west of Calhoun Street. The existing subway has five foot sidewalks ,
on both sides and a pavement width face to face of curb, of 30 feet. At the present time I
the underpass has a marked vertical clearance of 13 feet 9 inches, thus restricting truck
traffic. The street has been resurfaced in recent years. The existing roadway surface has
an approximate profile grade of seven percent between the vertical curve at the bottom of
the underpass and the vertical curve at the crest at both ends of the underpass area.
Considering the length of time the underpass has been in service the retaining walls,
sidewalk and pavement surface appear to be in good condition. During a field survey of
the site it was noted that the walls east of the railroad bridge have a very slight lean
toward the roadway. West of the bridge, and on the north wall, it appears that a portion
of the retaining wall has been repa.ired near the pumping station_ A portion of the
.
